In honor of Valentine’s Day, I thought I would get all sappy and tell you why I love working with my husband every day. I already know what my sister and sister-in-law are thinking, “Gag me with a fork”. Well too bad ladies, I love it and I’m going to tell you all about it!
My husband and I will be married for one year in April and have been farming together for the past four years. I feel very lucky to be able to work side-by-side with my husband every day. I think it makes us a stronger couple and makes the “work” feel less like work. We start the morning together, farm together, solve problems together, and go to bed together. It has its trying moments and there are days we want to strangle each other, (sorting cattle together can be a real test of a relationship) but for the most part it is pretty awesome and here is why:
1. We get to see each other every day. Sure, it is work, but when we are together it is just like hanging out. It makes the hard days easier and the good days much more fun.
2. A “good job” or a “thank-you” can be followed up with a pat on the rear without the risk of getting in trouble with HR.
3. You always have some one you can count on for a second opinion when making a business decision.
4. You never stay mad at each other for long. There will always be some cow or an employee that will tick you off more than your spouse. You will soon forgive and forget as you will want to vent to your partner about it.
5. You are able to anticipate your “co-worker’s” next move and therefore, increasing efficiency. We have been farming together for sometime now and have a pretty good flow going. I don’t want to brag, but we are probably the fastest cattle sorters around.
6. When you are having a bad day or are feeling down, your spouse is there to cheer you up.
7. If a salesperson shows up to the farm, there is a 50% chance you won’t have to deal with him/her. Simply hide and make your spouse do the talking.
8. You don’t take each other for granted. You see how hard the other works in a day, whether it be at the farm or at home, and it makes you appreciate what they do for you, the family, and the farm so much more.
9. When you find needles, syringes, and other odd items in the dryer you don’t have to worry about your spouse’s well-being; you know it is farm related.
10. Noon. You get to eat lunch together!
They are pretty simple and somewhat silly reasons (and I’m sure I am forgetting some), but my husband and I both agree that they make the farm-life even more enjoyable. I couldn’t imagine sorting cattle, making decisions, or slapping butts with anyone but him!
Awesome! 🙂
Thank you!
Krista,
On #7 we just tell them that the boss isn’t here, we just work here. I know that’s the chicken way out, but it works.
We have lived and worked together for 25 yrs. (married for 32yrs.). I would not trade this time for any other job. When one of us gets sick for an extended time you realize how much you rely on your partner.
Love it! Haha
what are 10 reasons why it might not rock?
Well, I’m not sure I can come up with 10, but I can say at the end of the day we both really stink. Not very romantic.
This is cute. (:
Thank you making your blog a team note!!! I have drafted a very similar post highlighting the best of marrying your business partner 🙂
Glad you find some commonality! Farm on!
Noon: it’s not just for eating.
I’m glad you understand what I was getting at there 😉
I assume with that said you two aren’t stinky before lunch? lol
haha…no we are usually a bit stinky….oh well!!
Reblogged this on iSimpleTypeApp News and Support.
This is perfect. My soon-to-be hubby is taking a job in town shortly after we get married, although we will still have before and after work and weekends, things on the farm won’t be quite as enjoyable for me.
I love it! I farmed with my boyfriend until I decided to go back to grad school and I miss it every day. Farming together was WAY better than the “normal” relationship where we see each other in the morning and after work.
Farm life sure is great! Glad you enjoyed the post 🙂
It’s a real plrseuae to find someone who can think like that
Absolutely love this! Me and my husband have been married for 5 months but have farmed together for 3 years. Glad there are others out there who enjoy it as much as we do. Its great and wouldn’t have it any other way!
Agreed!!
I love this!! I agree 100% that farming with the Hubs is the BEST! We have been married and farming for a year and a half! I farmed with my dad before that so farming with the hubby is a HUGE upgrade! So many benefits and everything can turn into a date 🙂 I will be following your blog from now on and will probably spend the rest of my afternoon reading all your other posts.
Awe! Thanks so much! I am glad you enjoyed the post and hope you find my other posts to be as great 🙂
I am wondering how household chores are managed? Do you split them up?
I would say I do most of the housework. My husband puts in extra hours at the farm hauling manure and fixing equipment (things I have no interest or skill in haha). However, my husband is really good at pitching in around the house and helping me when I need it. 🙂
Young LOVE!.
..keep your post/letter and send it to yourselves in five, ten, twenty years..after LIFE happens! Hope you are still young at heart and in LOVE!
..sad regrets from one farm chick for STOPPING to work with my farmer-rooster and START taking time away from him and his farm to have his baby chicks and clean his chicken coop!
..still together after 35 years and three kids and three grandkids..but just not the same young LOVE!
