Ugh. Not a good start to my week. Let’s start this story from the beginning… This past weekend I went back to my hometown to visit family and help a good friend of mine pick out her wedding gown. I was ecstatic early Saturday morning when I received a picture message from my husband informing […]
Things are getting HOT today, we are talking about reproduction! (Cue sexy music). Okay, cool your jets; it is not as wild as you might think. In fact, on many dairy farms, reproduction in cattle doesn’t even involve a live male (bull). A majority of today’s dairy farmers artificially inseminate their cattle .
Today my good friend, Jill, shares with us another side of the dairy industry; the “show” side. That’s right, cow beauty pageants. Dairy farmers are extremely passionate about dairy and many enjoy showing off their quality animals. Farmers travel great lengths with their cows to participate in cow shows and compete with others. Showing cattle is a great way to bond with cows and other folks in the dairy industry. Read below to learn more about the show circuit!
See this happy, healthy cow chowing down on some TMR? Well, last week she wasn’t so happy…or healthy; she had mastitis. Mastitis is an inflammatory response to infection causing visibly abnormal milk (clots, off-color). I finally caught it on camera, a LIVE birth! On average, we have two calves born everyday on our farm. Sometimes more, sometimes less; it is dependent on the season. A cow giving birth is pretty exciting and we will get to the video, but let’s start this story from the beginning. What can you […]
Every day on the farm is interesting and there never seems to be a dull moment. If it is not a newborn calf, crazy weather or broken machinery keeping us entertained, the animals on the farm sure do a good job of it. Animals do some silly things and thanks to technology and an app […]
I recently caught up with my girl, 1061; also known as Judith. We are basically best friends and she said it was cool if I wanted to call her Judy. If you recall, Judy was Employee of the Month this past February. She was up at the bunk eating this afternoon, and I thought I would […]
Just like we have the need to trim our finger nails, cows need to have their hooves trimmed. The hoof wall slowly grows everyday and if not properly maintained, it can cause the cow pain and discomfort. Now, I know what you might be thinking, “My husband hasn’t trimmed his toenails since last fall, and […]
