I hear it all the time, “Why put on make-up to go out to the barn? The cows don’t care.”. It’s true, that the cows don’t care…but I do. Putting on a little make-up each morning makes me feel like a human. It makes me feel like I have my shit together and can take on the day. I like knowing that if a salesperson swings into the farm, I won’t look like a troll who rolled out of bed.
Some may think this is selfish or vain and to that, I say, “Take a hike!”. It’s important -even for farmers- to do things that make you feel good each day. When was it decided that if you are a farmer you shouldn’t like make-up or getting dolled up? Can’t I drive skid steers AND look cute? Can’t I milk cows AND wear lip gloss? Today’s farmer doesn’t have to fit a mold, so put on the mascara, brew the fancy coffee, get the manicure and snap the selfie. Do what makes you happy.
These tiny acts of self-care are important whether you are a farmer, a stay-at-home mom, a college student, or a woman in the corporate world. Self-care encourages you to maintain a healthy relationship with yourself so that you can transmit good feelings to others. You cannot give to others what you don’t have yourself. See a smile, give a smile.
